  • The squirrel monkey is a New World monkey that is made up of 5 different subspecies. Found in the tropical forests of Central and South America, the squirrel monkey is commonly referred to as the “death’s head monkey” due to its ominous facial features.

  • Characteristics: Scampering through the canopy layer is one of the smallest types of known monkey!   • Size and Color: Although squirrel monkeys are occasionally black, almost all of them share the sandy tan fur and black and white facial colorations of this figurine. Standing 5.75 inches long and 2.5 inches wide, our squirrel monkey statuette is roughly the size of a soda can on its side.

History

In many regions where they’re present, squirrel monkeys are thought of as pests because they often invaded plantations and farms for food. However, this is considered to be a direct result of habitat loss. Although squirrel monkeys as a whole are not classified as endangered, two subspecies are classified as vulnerable due to the previously mentioned loss of their natural habitat coupled with a dwindling supply of their most commonly consumed foods.
