It’s said that the most dangerous moments of a Sea Turtle’s life are the very first—when it makes the slow, awkward journey across the sand from egg to sea. Once in the water, though, life doesn’t exactly get easy for them. The omnivores swim warm coastal waters, feeding on crabs and jellyfish when young, but switching to a diet of seagrass and algae as they age and grow. And boy do they grow. Adult Sea Turtles can weigh up to 700 pounds and measure 5 feet across. At all stages of life, they face danger from fishing, poaching, and habitat degradation. Conservation efforts include protected beaches, new technology in beachfront lighting, new fishing technology, and plenty of education.
