History
Roosters have been domesticated for thousands of years, but somewhat more recently, they’ve taken a place atop weather vanes, which perhaps seems curious. The story goes back around 2000 years to the time of Jesus Christ, when he declared that one of his followers, Peter, would deny him three times before the rooster crowed. Fast forward 900 years, and the pope declared that churches should have a rooster attached to their steeples as a reminder of this prophecy. Even the famous Bayeux Tapestry has a scene where men are fastening a rooster weather vane to Westminster Abbey. Weather vanes, with roosters and other animals, made the jump from the old world to the new world, where they continue to sit above farms even today.
