History

Farming has been a way of life since prehistory, when hunter-gatherer foragers settled into communities. All farm animals are domesticated versions of wild creatures. The settlers who left busy cities on the U.S. east coast took a variety of animals with them to homestead. Horses were used for riding and for pulling. Donkeys were draft animals as well. Cows provided milk. Pigs provided meat and also helped keep the wilderness at bay with their foraging. Chickens provided eggs and meat. Dogs were helpful companions for hunting and they warned of wild animals. Cats were needed to keep mouse and rat populations at bay. All in all, the classic farm animals all had important uses on these self-sufficient farms.
