This seal’s common name doesn’t only refer to its spots – it’s also one of the top predators in the Antarctic, just like the big cat its named for. Don’t let its reptile-like shape fool you – the leopard seal is most definitely a mammal.
History:
Leopard seals are perfectly specialized for navigating the Antarctic waters in which they hunt. They prey on penguins, fish, krill, other seals, and anything else they can sink their teeth into. One was even found with a platypus in its stomach! During the breeding season, male leopard seals are known to be extremely vocal, making a variety of distinct calls underwater, though the exact purpose isn’t clear.
