History
Koalas and eucalyptus trees are intimately connected. The tough, poisonous leaves of the eucalyptus trees are the favorite food of the fuzzy Koalas, and the marsupials’ claws and opposable digits keep them safely perched among their banquet. Koalas seldom need to leave the trees, as they obtain most of their water needs from the lush leaves. Although their populations are stable, a single Koala needs about 100 eucalyptus trees to maintain its prodigious eating habits, so the marsupials depend on unbroken swaths of the trees. Deforestation in Australia could threaten the species.
