History
Cupid is the Roman name for the Greek god Eros, whose name means desire. Cupid was the child of Venus, known to the Greeks as Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. Some stories give him no father, while others name Mars, Roman god of war, as his father. Cupid appears in many myths, often as the tiny stone that starts an avalanche. He caused the queen of Carthage to fall in love with Aeneas in the Roman epic Aeneid. The image of cupid survives with such great popularity today simply because it never fell out of style. The Romans used the image, and the winged god of desire was still seen hundreds of years later in Medieval art. As a symbol of love, its popularity remains great even today.
