History
The Great Barrier Reef, where Clownfish and other colorful reef dwellers live, might be 20 million years old. It’s made of layers and layers of coral, new on top of old, alive on top of dead, and it stretches for 1800 miles off the coast of Australia. It’s one of the natural wonders of the world, a World Heritage Site, and the only living thing visible from space. Although Clownfish are abundant, endangered species such as the Green Sea Turtle and Dugong also make their homes in the Reef. While the Clownfish home still faces challenges, large protected areas and a single governing body have contributed to some recent stability.
