HERR RYAN S-T

The Herr 100 Series models (kit numbers begin with HRR1) are all originally designed as free flight rubber power aircraft, and as such they fly beautifully. These were the first ever laser-cut model airplane kits on the market. Now in this day of miniature radio gear and brushless outrunner electric motors they are enjoying a new life as radio control subjects.

CAD drawings and Laser cut parts doesn’t mean it’s good.

The model looks good and the laser cut parts are at first, impressive. But as I started building the model, I realised many of the parts, finely cut with laser precision failed to follow the first principals of building a model from balsa. There were many areas of the model where parts were not up to the job because the wood grain was incorrect. I guess this is where the “suits advanced builders” comes into play.
I ended up replacing the lower lateral brace of centre fuselage D shaped frames with pieces cut from scrap. There were a few other pieces similar.
The wings were most disappointing. From poor design of the ribs to poor instructions. In my opinion the wings are more fragile than they need to be and with careful design and negligible weight gain, could be much more robust.
Seasoned modellers will be able to make a sound model by using their experience.
But if it was well designed from the start, they wouldn’t have to.
