History
Although other ocean dwellers face population declines, Cownose Rays are one species that is thriving and increasing in numbers. Their next of kin includes Manta Rays, Bat Rays, and Spotted Eagle Rays, but Cownose Rays are a separate species. Their original name meant nose wing, and their current scientific name means bison wing, but they’ve kept their nickname because of the indentation between wings that looks like a cow’s muzzle.
