History
Because domestic cats appear in ancient Egyptian art earlier than in the records or artwork of other civilizations, archeologists assume they were first domesticated there. However, geneticists have added some assurance to the claim with a study that found today’s domesticated cats descended from west Asian wild cats around 8,000 BC. This fits the Egyptian timeline, and the animals would certainly have been accessible. Unlike dogs, which have changed drastically since being domesticated from wolves, cats haven’t undergone more than superficial changes. They still have retractable claws, razor-sharp teeth, speedy reflexes, and lithe bodies, and most domesticated cats are perfectly capable of surviving on their own.
