History
Camels have long been domesticated because of their amazing abilities as sturdy, desert pack animals. However, the only wild camels that remain are the roughly 1,000 that live in the deserts of China and Mongolia in east Asia. They are, therefore, listed as critically endangered due to low numbers. A long gestation period doesn’t help matters; it takes over a year for a single baby camel to be carried and born. Hunting, wolves, and limited habitat are the main causes of its critical status. Efforts to save the wild Bactrian Camel include a camel preserve in China and a camel breeding center in Mongolia.
