Outhouse usually consists of three main parts: a hole in the ground, a slab or floor with a small opening, and a cubicle. The pit is usually at least 3 meters (10 feet) deep and at least 1 m (3.2 feet) wide. The World Health Organization recommends building a pit latrine at a reasonable distance from home, balancing ease of access and odor, keeping groundwater and surface water as far away as possible to reduce the risk of contamination. Floor opening must not exceed 25 centimeters (9.8 inches) in diameter due to the risk of children falling into it.
