History
As an apex predator, the great white shark is dependent on a vibrant ecosystem to provide its food needs. While great whites have been attacked by orcas, by far the biggest threat to sharks is humans, whether for food, sport, tradition, or even by accidental bycatch. Great white sharks breed and grow slowly, so their numbers don’t recover from damage quickly. After years of excess hunting, great whites are now listed as Vulnerable, meaning they still face risk of extinction.
